Minutes from January 15, 2015 Meeting

PSO/MPAS Meeting SUPA Building, Rm 200 January 15, 2015

MINUTES:

1. Introductions

2. TedX – Happening on Feb 28 (Saturday) from 9-noon in the Rauch Planetarium. They are already out of tickets! There may still be some available for the simulcast. If you still want to be inside for the talks you can VOLUNTEER! Let Jacque know if you’d like to volunteer! Topic is “interconnected” – interdisciplinary work; how seemingly different topics can work together. PSO has volunteered a monetary contribution ($200-300) in the form of gifts for the speakers.

3. Projects for the Semester A) Jane Jacobs Walk – the goal is to get the participants involved with their environment and that particular neighborhood. March 28 (Saturday) in Butchertown time? Tour guides – Gill Holland - developer in NuLu Tom Owen - city Councilman in the Highlands, UofL professor President of the Buchertown Neighborhood Association - potential End of tour gathering – potentially “Jack Knife” in the Butchertown Market building PSO needs help PLANNING this event! End of March / early April. B) Student Showcase – Planner Alumni Association wants to partner with us to put on a showcase. Let Jacque know if you’re interested in participating/volunteering/helping organize – event will occur between finals and graduation.

C) Clean Up – adapt-a-highway Voted to have this on March 29 (Sunday) The clean up takes about an hour and a half – our stretch of road is between the Highlands and downtown. Our contract is up this year – do we want to continue with this and renew?

D) Movie Night – UDS building has been offered to us for this activity January 30 after Capstone Class at 8:30

4. Dr Simpson talk – How can we better connect students with…? a) Faculty b) Students c) Employers Ideas – a) If there is a specific “order” courses should be taken in, this needs to be made more clear. b) Scheduling of classes should be improved – required courses have scheduling conflicts (ex: Site Planning and Urban Economics in Fall Semester). c) Program tracts are outdated – requirements for the different focuses are not consistent online, in handouts, etc. d) How can students get more involved in the community? Faculty advisors dedicated to certain students and particular specializations. Student Showcase? (item B above) Faculty and student picnic luncheons – would need to be at a time of day that is convenient for students working during the day and taking evening classes. Students could “shadow” a real-world mentor working in the student’s desired field – potential connection between the student body, KAPA, and the Alumni Association?

5. Space on the 3rd floor of the SUPA building – Would we be interested in using this space for – studying, a gathering area, events, a place to work on group projects? Any other ideas?
